I have been thinking lately about the music of present compared to the music of the '90s. I started high school in 1996 when grunge was at it's peak and I pretty much hated it. At the time few bands caught my fancy ,Bush, was my favorite and still is on my top. But now I hear todays music and I see a lack of talent in this "Metal" scene. The "Grunge" bands had heart and a lot of them were really good but I didn't see it because I didn't want to be "Trendy" and now I really miss it.
Don't get me wrong not all new music sucks and not all old music is good, but in my opinion music has declined and is starting to repeat it's same sound over again in every new metal band. I just wonder if I am the only one that is feeling this way or if I am just losing my mind?

Barry and I have been having the same conversation for years. I'm of the opinion that most of it is that talent, effort, and real emotional depth have taken a back seat to speed of production and marketability. A good example of this is the lack of melodic leads throughout song and the lack of guitar solos. Not only are the musicians popular today lacking the talent to create such works of art but they also don't put in the time in the studio that the great bands of the past did because the labels won't let them. Time is money. When you listen to NuMetal all you hear is vocal because all they are selling is image through melody and the pretty face behind the mic. It's sad. A little of it also is that every generation seems to latch onto the music that was popular when they were "back in school." My parents still insist that fleetwood mac is the best band of all time while I admit their greatness I insist it's the original GNR while you say grunge. I like it all but like my parents before me I know that I'll be forty five one day listening to Appetite for Destruction and my kids will think my music is lame... "Sigh..."

Troy you hit the nail on the head. It's ART! It's not for money, it's not for fame, it's not for the record companies, it's supposed to be an individual artistic expression! And if you have the "talent", if you are one in a million then you deserve the spoils that go along with it. Too many bands become "famous" for the wrong reasons. In my opinion the bands like Rush, Pink Floyd, Eagles, AC/DC, and many others that are still around decades after their album releases are a rare gathering of strangers whom just happen to click and they make beautiful songs together! It's like winning the lotto. For example, say you take 100 musicians and randomly place them together and get 20 bands. Each band creates/records a song, the BEST they can. Have a listen. Then take those same 20 people and let them "find" each other then have them create a new song with the new band members, you will be surprised! Bands like Fleetwood Mac were fantastic in their time because they had heart. Put your heart in your songs, have the talent to go with that heart, add a few other ingredients and you have the making of a good band.
I find most of todays music shallow, meaningless, lacking heart and soul. Sometimes you can tell it's not the artists but the record company that wants it that way.
I'm happy to be heard on itascaRadio.com and although I know I'll never be famous, at least I have MY music the way I like it ... and that's worth more to me than all the tea in china. Too many sellouts today just for the cash. Right back to greed.... *sigh*

First let me say sorry that it took me so long to respond... What a great point you make T! It took awhile for it to sink in but now that it has you are so right. My goal in life isn't to be a pro musician or rock star or even to be rich and famous; all I want musically is to enjoy what I'm doing and hopefully create something other people will want to hear repeatedly. That's all. That's what makes itascaRadio.com so great! I can create music and have it heard and get the feedback on it nearly instantly! What better situation is there for an artist? That's what we all are here for. We are all hear to get feedback on what we do in some form or another. I just want people posting what they like about my music in the forum while others are here to gain fans who can give them face to face feedback at a shows one day. Most of us will never be famous but here we can have the few fans we are ever going to have. Most people never have one fan. I feel that I already have several to many here in the form of listeners and hopefully soon in the form of those who respect my music. Well... Good point T!

Well said.....I listen to what passes as contemporary music
today or chart busters and I want to go to sleep! It sucks.
It is because of Itasca Radio and like minded stations that hopefully in
a few years, the real art and artists will be in vogue and it won't be difficult to find them.
I always will stop by and look at what an artist is painting or sketching on the street
because you never know what gem you may find. We may be diamonds in the rough but
we are true and pure and that is what it is all about

Jeff just nailed it! At one point leonardo daVinci was just an artist on the street, james taylor was just a guy playing guitar in a hospital, pink floyd was once just a blues club band. We don't even need to change music, we are music. The dedication to the cause of the arts in general is the most inspirational thing here, that's all we have to do, just keep it going.

Too often in "art" they try to box you into a style or period of art works (personal experience talking) and somehow I seem to feel that these great artists weren't the sell out conformists that art instructors want to make them out to be. I'm of the mind set that it's art if it was intended to be art and if it conveys a message. We forget that everything started somewhere. Someone "invented" pointalism! It didn't just appear as a style you could choose from in some damn class! Some "radical" mother came up with it! We make art here because we intend to. I had an instructor tell me once that you'll never know the value or place of your art if you don't continue to create art. In other words the payoff is down the road. For many it's after death. For us... It's right now on itascaradio.com!!!

Hello Dave,

If you are in the US, you wont find many on during prime time hours. I have my best luck and fun flying with the with the Russians and Europeans, who seem to fly until they pass out    Voice comms at these times are very interesting and fun also. Makes me wonder why the whole world cant get along

The US has given up on the flight sim genre, which would be long dead without the influx of sims from the eastern bloc.
